Hey, hey, welcome back to Next Act Ninjas, the go-to podcast for mastering your health and wealth longevity. I'm your host, Rachael Van Pelt, and today we're going to tackle one of the keys to winning your long game, seeing opportunity where others only see difficulties. I call this "opportunity mindset", and I know you know what I'm talking about. It's when life throws a wrench in your plans and you have to make the most of it. Maybe you have a sudden health scare, you experience an economic downturn or you just realize that your ideal dream home or retirement lifestyle is just beyond your reach. So here's the question. When life throws those kinds of challenges your way, do you only see barriers or do you see the bridges? Do you see obstacles or opportunities?

Today I'm going to show you how the ability to see opportunity where others only see difficulty is a gift. It isn't a genetic gift or some rare innate talent. It's not just luck or optimism. It's a skill that's completely within your power to cultivate. It's a gift that you must nurture. And you need three critical ingredients.

Number one, you must clearly define what you want. You have to cast a crystal clear vision for yourself. Number two, you have to actually believe that vision is possible. If your desire and your beliefs aren't fully aligned, you're going to stay stuck. Number three, you need to set your intentions and take focused action. Prioritizing the who, not the how. Today I'm going to dig into these three steps because they are key to transforming your perspective and opening up a whole new world of possibilities, not through any mystical manifestation mumbo jumbo, but based on the science.

That first step, defining exactly what you want is huge. Clarity is power. You've heard me say this before and I'm going to repeat it because it's foundational. Without clarity, you're essentially driving in the fog without GPS. You're just hoping to stumble upon your destination purely by chance. That is not how a thriving Next Act unfolds.

Just to give you a practical example, let's say your goal is to find the perfect home for your Next Act, one that genuinely supports your healthspan and wealthspan. It's not enough to say, "I want a nice home to live in in my retirement". That's too vague. Instead, you have to visualize specifics. Something like, "I desire a home that supports my lifestyle, meets my financial goals, allows me to thrive in place, brings me joy every single day". And you might get even more specific and say, "I want abundant natural light, single level living, proximity to my family, manageable upkeep. I'd like to be within 10 minutes of hiking trails and a strong faith community. I want to be settled into this perfect home within 12 months". You get the idea.

When your vision is that explicit, your brain's built-in filtering system is going to kick in. Suddenly you're going to start noticing opportunities that align perfectly with your clearly defined desires. There's a scientific reason for this. It's called "cognitive priming". When you actually take the time to set a clear intention, your brain literally starts working on the solution. It primes itself to notice opportunities that are aligned with that vision. Neuroscientists call this the reticular activating system (RAS) at work. Your brain prioritizes whatever you consciously identify as important.

I know you've felt your RAS or your reticular activating system at work before. Maybe you're shopping for a certain type of car, and let's say it's a Toyota Highlander, and suddenly you see that car everywhere when you didn't notice them before. Highlanders were always around, but now you're shopping for one, and so everyone's all of sudden driving that car, aren't they? They're seemingly everywhere. And that's just because your reticular activating system has prioritized seeing that car.

The same happens with news that confirms our cognitive biases. If we hold a certain political opinion, everywhere we look, we'll see headlines to confirm that opinion. It's just the way our brains work. But why is that important? Because you can use this system to your advantage. You can prime your brain to see opportunities everywhere, where others only see difficulty.

I encourage you to take the time to think deeply about what your ideal Next Act lifestyle looks like and how it's going to support your longevity. Write down your vision in great detail. Clearly articulate not just what you want, but why it matters so much to and by when you want to achieve that vision. Visualize it, emotionalize it. How does it make you feel when you have achieved that vision? Revisit it daily. Give your brain clear marching orders and watch as opportunities start revealing themselves.

The next step is just aligning your beliefs with that vision. But this step is crucial because vision without belief creates conflict. It causes internal friction, a psychological discomfort known as "cognitive dissonance". Just to continue with our example, let's say you've clearly defined your dream home. But now you have this niggling voice inside your head that says, "Yeah, but is it even possible? Homes like that don't exist, or at least they're not within my budget". Now you're faced with two choices. One, you can either lower your expectations to match your current belief, settling for something less satisfying, or two, you can actively raise your beliefs to align with that vision. You can decide to explore possibilities rather than immediately dismissing them.

Here's the truth, our beliefs, they're not fixed. They're just stories we've accepted, usually unconsciously. The stories are shaped by our experiences, our family narratives, our societal expectations. Too often these beliefs limit us unnecessarily, which is why we need to challenge those beliefs. I'm going to start with a common one. Maybe you think something along the lines of, "Oh, finding that perfect downsize, the one that's within financial reach and supports aging in place, that's not realistic". I'm going to ask you to challenge this belief. Ask yourself something like, "Is that absolutely true? Or is this just an assumption I have, maybe I've disguised as realism"? Can you think of examples of others in your same financial situation who successfully created lifestyles aligned with their ideal vision. I'm sure you can think of someone.

If you can't think of anyone, it could just be that your belief is based on insufficient information. Maybe you haven't been exposed to people who've done exactly what you want to do. That's totally normal. Our inner circles can definitely confine our reality, but we don't have to stay in that bubble.

Challenge yourself with a contrarian viewpoint. What if the beliefs that are holding you back aren't truths at all, but rather comfortable excuses that are just shielding you from perceived risk or effort? Are you willing to shift your beliefs to match your desires, even if it initially makes you feel a little uncomfortable?

If you want to align your beliefs with your vision, rather than just lower expectations, you have to keep challenging your assumptions. You have to be ready to accept the possibility, maybe even the probability, that your vision can become a reality, not just stay a pipe dream. And look, I realize that this is easier said than done. Alignment is by far the hardest step. We are experts at trying to protect ourselves from disappointment. We tell ourselves something is impossible and then we couch it in something like, I'm just being realistic. And yeah, sometimes we do need to compromise. That said, we must keep priming our mind to look for opportunities, not just difficulties. Once you've done that, once you're crystal clear on what you want and you truly believe it's possible to achieve, now you're ready for action.

Clarity and belief are powerful, but you still won't get anywhere without action. But you don't want to just take action for action's sake. Many people, they finally get motivated to move, but then they get caught up in planning to plan or going through the motions kind of action taking. Or they just get caught up in totally trying to recreate the wheel, doing everything on their own. You don't need to recreate the wheel. Whatever your goal, someone has already done it.

Successful action starts with finding the right "who" rather than getting bogged down in the "how". In fact, the bigger and more specific your vision, the more you need an expert to meet all of your expectations. You don't have to put in 10,000 hours to become an expert if you can strategically partner with someone who's already one. And besides, doing it alone can be overwhelming. The complexity of today's economy, real estate markets, healthcare systems, they can easily overburden us and keep us stuck. And then what happens? We start telling ourselves it's impossible or too hard we're right back to step two where our beliefs are no longer aligned with our desires.

Instead of spending months or even years overwhelmed by health struggles or shifting markets, what if you partnered with experts who deeply understand your vision, your values, your finances. Those partnerships can immediately transform your problems into possibilities.

I saw this happen with one of my clients named Diane. After working for 30 years as a nurse in a large hospital system, she retired at the age of 62, and she thought retirement was going to be a welcome relief, but just a few months in, she already felt lost. Her calendar was empty, her identity was shaken. The house that used to feel comfortable started feeling a little too big, a little too quiet. She kept telling herself, "I should be grateful. I have a pension, my health is decent, I have time to relax". But the truth, she was bored. She became unmotivated. She got stuck in a loop of indecision and disappointment.

Now initially she was focused on all the things that she couldn't do, what she didn't want. She couldn't afford the escalating property taxes and HOA fees on her current property. She didn't want to keep up with all the maintenance of her big home. She couldn't figure out what kind of lifestyle would bring her joy. She just didn't know where to start. Her thinking was problem-oriented. Everything felt like a limitation.

So I challenged her to flip the script. What if she stopped focusing on what she didn't want and started focusing on what she did want? She started asking herself, "What really brings me joy"? She got quiet. She started journaling. In just a few days, her vision began to take shape. Diane realized how much she enjoyed walking near water, spending time with her nieces and nephews. She loved her strong community of faith.

This shift helped her start to clearly articulate her desires, and she started to list all our "must-haves". But then came the flood of limiting beliefs. Could she actually afford a place that met all her needs? Should someone her age make a big change? Would it be too hard? Would she have to give up too much? Would it be a mistake?

She wrestled with her doubts, but instead of shrinking her vision, she challenged her limiting beliefs and put together a team to help her achieve her vision. She hired me to coach her through the transition, asked a financial planner to run her numbers. I referred her to a great realtor in exactly the community she thought was out of her reach. Within six months, she'd sold that big suburban home and she found her downsized townhome in a dream community that had lakeside trails, was close to family, had church community she adored.

It was a total game changer for her because she didn't just change where she lived, she completely overhauled her mindset. She went from problem-focused to possibility focused. Now she just loves her Next Act. She's volunteering at a local library. She hosts a Bible study in her neighborhood. She's even started a small business, little side hustle, if you will, cooking healthy meals for some of her neighbors.

I love this story. I think it perfectly illustrates just how clarity, belief alignment, and asking for help can shift your entire trajectory. And it shifts it really fast. Remember, trying to figure everything out on your own doesn't make you strong and independent. Sometimes it just keeps you stuck and overwhelmed. True empowerment comes when you learn to leverage all of the collective wisdom, the skill, experience that's out there. And that helps you achieve your vision faster and more efficiently.

So, be honest with yourself. Have you delayed action because you're stuck figuring out how to achieve your goal alone? Who could you connect with today to close the gap between where you are and your ideal future? Action, through strategic partnership, is the fastest way to turn your Next Act vision into reality.

So if you're ready to see opportunity where most people just see difficulty, I challenge you to take three steps immediately. Clearly articulate your Next Act vision. Just start by daydreaming. But then I want you to get to the point where you can write it down in vivid detail. If you're struggling at first, start just with a brain dump. Journal, draw, mind-map, whatever you need to do, but then the more specific you get, the better.

And once you've casted that vision, audit your beliefs. Identify a few limiting beliefs and act like a skeptic or contrarian and question the validity of those beliefs. Flip any disbelief on its head so you can find an empowering belief that's fully aligned with your vision. You might have to go back and forth between these first two steps until you feel aligned with what you want. Then, only then, is the time to take action. But I want you to take immediate action. It can be a small step. Just reach out to one person, a potential consultant or coach or mentor, someone who can accelerate your journey towards that vision.

Remember, shifting to an "opportunity mindset" isn't about seeing the glass half full. It's not some Pollyanna positivity. It's about cultivating clarity, empowering beliefs, and action-oriented partnership. Your Next Act is not just possible, it's waiting for you to embrace it. But you have to do the work. Don't expect your dream lifestyle to just fall into your lap.

And as always, I'd love to be the "who" to help you create that best Next Act. You can find a link to hop on my calendar anytime in the show notes, and I'll walk you through these three powerful steps to get you moving in the right direction. Don't overthink it, just do it.

Until next time, live well, love more, age less, my friends.
